Pros and Cons of CVD Diamonds

Pros and Cons of CVD Diamonds

Also known as chemical vapor deposition diamonds, CVD diamonds have been gaining a lot of attention as of late. Also known as lab-grown gems or faux diamonds, CVD diamonds were first created in the year 1956, and are now just getting recognized. Mostly sold overseas and online, CVD diamonds are synthetic diamonds that are created with CVD techniques. They are made one of two ways, either through HPHT (high pressure high temperature), or through chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Also made with a lot of hydrogen, CVD diamonds are artificial, and made completely by machine.

There is no doubt that CVD diamonds are not perfect, and do come with their own set of flaws that must be considered. The reality is that people these days are much less concerned about quality, appearance, and durability, and much more concerned about price and ease of use, which is why CVD diamonds are unfortunately getting more and more popular, especially with the younger generation. For a quality diamond, there is nothing like the real thing, since real diamonds have a gorgeous quality that just cannot be replicated.

Below is a list of several Pro’s and Con’s relating to CVD diamonds:

Pro: At first glance, CVD diamonds are pretty and sparkly

Con: You never know what you are going to get with a CVD diamond, since there are no real specifications or regulations

Pro: Cheaper than real diamonds

Con: They are very hard to find, CVD diamonds are not offered in many stores currently.

Pro: They come in different colors, shapes, and sizes.

Con: They do not come with the well-respected GIA certification that real diamonds do.

Pro: CVD diamonds can be made in 6-10 weeks.

Con: Many well-known jewelry stores still refuse to sell CVD diamonds. Usually, CVD diamonds must be purchased wholesale, from overseas sellers.
